Dr. Josep de la Puente is the Geophysical Applications group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. He holds a BSc in Physics and PhD in Natural Sciences. During his scientific career he has worked in different aspects of computational geophysics, including earthquake modelling, seismic exploration and electromagnetic methods. In particular, his interests lie in using high-performance computing (HPC) to boost our knowledge of the subsurface. In recent years he has focused on technology transfer in the field of geophysical exploration. He has published almost 30 articles and 100 contributions to conferences and workshops.
HPC applications for the energy industry
The energy sector is critically important for ensuring both short- and long-term properity and growth. Every transformative process in our environment, i.e. building, creating, modifying, has a cost in terms of energy. In this talk I will explore how HPC is already transforming the energy sector with the help of fast and accurate simulations. I will pay particular attention to hydrocarbon exploration, a field where HPC enables unprecedented levels of resolution when mapping the subsurface. HPC technology opens the possibility of exploring and exploiting new prospects safely, both in environmental and economic terms, and its role is only likely to grow in coming years.
