Dr. Jaime Puente

Bio:

Jaime Puente is the artificial intelligence (AI) segment manager at Lenovo, responsible for developing and managing research collaborations with universities and business partnerships with AI Startups worldwide, bridging research and industry. Prior to joining Lenovo, Jaime spent 14 years as director of academic outreach at Microsoft Research working on strategic research initiatives in Latin America and the U.S. Before Microsoft, Jaime worked for Commerce One, a pioneering e-commerce company and before that, he was a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) in Ecuador.
Jaime was a Fulbright Scholar for his early engagement with academia. His academic background includes an M.S. in Computer Engineering from Iowa State University, an MBA and an Electronics Engineering degree both from ESPOL and an Educational Specialist post-master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Florida, United States. Jaime holds a Ph.D. in Computing Technology in Education from NSU. His main research interests concern artificial intelligence, statistical data analysis, high performance computing, and the integration of digital technologies in education.

The Convergence of HPC and AI: How Lenovo is addressing this trend

Abstract:

It is becoming clear that the supercomputing field is taking the next giant step in its evolutionary path. Researchers and commercial enterprises have been increasingly applying high performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) for gaining scientific insights and adding value to their organizations. To support these areas, Lenovo has been driving projects with universities using popular ML/DL frameworks coupled with HPC to show how the overall workflow can be optimized for performance and improved insight. The work of training a deep learning model requires large data and demands computing and networking capabilities similar to HPC workloads. In this talk, I will introduce how Lenovo is approaching this convergence of HPC and AI using its own HPC/AI technology and some high-impact research projects as examples. Finally, I will review the opportunities and challenges of AI in the HPC landscape.
